The Timeline
The story begins in April of the year 1937. In that month, a lot of impactful things happen. The first event happens on April 1st, when Tom Joad gets out of jail, by parole, after a 4-year sentence. After that, on April 3rd, Tom goes back home with help from a truck driver. He drops him off close to his family's farm. His family tells him that they are leaving for California tomorrow because their farm was taken by the bank. On April 4th, Tom and his family depart for California from Oklahoma.
Unfortunately, on April 10th, the grandpa dies during the long route to California and is buried on the side of the road. We now skip ahead to May 10th where the grandma also dies while they were mere days away from their goal. On May 15th, 1937, the family arrive in California and get across the border with grandma's body in the trunk.
On May 16th, 1937, Tom's oldest brother leaves and Rose's husband as well. On May 21st, the Joad family find somewhere to sleep, even if it's horrible. They arrive at Hooverville Camp. On June 3rd, they arrive at the government facility named Weedpatch Camp.
On June 6th, Tom finds work with a pipe-laying company. Unfortunately, on July 8th, the Joads are kicked out of Weepatch due to lack of work. But, on July 11th, the whole family finds work by picking fruit.
On July 19th, 1937, Tom runs into Casy, an old friend who has been organizing rallies for better working conditions in California. On August 5th, Casy gets killed by policemen who have been looking for him, Tom snaps and kills a police officer which forces him and his family to go into hiding the next day.
This concludes the timeline of the book Grapes of Wrath, a powerful story facing poverty and racism in the 1930s, written by John Steinbeck.
